Jaheem Hayles posts 1 of top 11 times in 60m hurdles nationally for SU

Syracuse featured successful races on both the men’s and women’s side at the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge.

This week, Syracuse’s track and field team traveled to Columbia for the Dr. Sander Columbia Challenge. The two-day event featured successful races for the Orange on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Starting on Friday night in the women’s 60m dash, Kahniya James put together another strong performance placing third overall in the race with a time of 7.56. Kaleia Arrington also competed, though in the unseeded portion, and placed fifth (7.98).

On the men’s side of the 60m dash, Trei Thorogood took fourth overall with a time of 6.91 seconds. Sean Tucker also competed, running a 7.02 and taking 15th in the prelims though he did not qualify for the finals.

In the men’s 60m hurdles Jaheem Hayles took home the first win for Syracuse on the day with a final time of 7.75 seconds which was also a personal record for him. Naseem Smith followed shortly behind in fifth place at 8.00 flat, and finally, Anthony Vazquez placed seventh at 8.13. Isaiah Lewis and Xayvion Perkins also ran, taking 14th (8.18) and 28th (8.56), respectively. But both did not qualify for the final heat.



Meanwhile, Shaleah Colaire took fifth overall in the women’s 60m hurdles at 8.39 seconds. CJ Fox and Kirstyn Schecter placed 18th (8.93) and 28th (9.34) respectively but did not qualify for the final heat.

In the distance medley, the women’s group was made up of Abigail Spiers, Eunice Boateng, Sage Brooks, and Annie Boos (in that order). They took sixth overall coming in at 11:30.62. On the men’s side, Noah Beveridge, James Nmah, Joey Eovaldi, and Nathan Henderson (also in that order) came in fifth place at 9:57.01.

The action continued on Saturday starting with the men’s and women’s 200m dash. Thorogood took home eighth place (22.08) while Nmah took 30th (22.68) on the men’s side for Syracuse. For the women’s team Syracuse had five runners; the leading runner was Boateng who took home fourth place with a final time of 24.29. She was followed by Colaire (24.88) and James (24.94) who took 13th and 14th, respectively. Janelle Pottinger (25.32) and Arrington (25.83) rounded out the race for Syracuse taking home 25th and 46th places.

The 400m dash followed the 200m dash, where Perkins placed 34th (52.23). On the women’s side Kennedy Tarley came in first amongst Syracuse runners in 26th (57.76), and she was followed shortly by Jana Riley who came in 37th (58.86) and finally Natalya Rodney came in 48th (59.82).

In the one mile run, Kevin Robertson came in fifth place with a final time of 4:06.50, just over the four minute mark. On the women’s side Savannah Roark came in first of the two Syracuse runners at 4:56.32, and she was followed by Olivia Joly who came in 43rd (5:11.78)

In the final event of the weekend — the women’s 4x400m relay — Tarley, Boateng, Riley and Colaire (in that order) placed third to cap off the weekend at 3:45.01.
